Earl Holcombe
1980-1993

 

Elected in 1980, Sheriff Holcombe was sworn in on January 1, 1981 and served as sheriff until he retired on January 4, 1993.

Sheriff Holcombe congratulates Evelyn Black on her graduation from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Black, who was hired by Holcombe, is the first female law enforcement officer in Oconee County.

Sheriff Holcombe supervises the destruction of illegal drugs, in April 1984, at the county landfill. Sheriff Holcombe destroyed approximately $7,500 worth of illegal drugs and several hundred dollars worth of pornographic material.

Sheriff Holcombe and Agent Billy Owens, SLED, inspect a moonshine still, which had been seized by deputies in March of 1981.

In 1984, Sheriff Holcombe adopted this patch as a standard emblem for the uniform. The patch depicts the Oconee's mountainous terrain, White Water Falls and the county's nickname, "The Golden Corner". Deputy Rick Thompkins, along with other deputies, were responsible for the design.
