(Walhalla, SC)-------------------------------------Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Lucas Watts has received a prestigious award this month from the National Association of Police Organizations, Inc.

Corporal Watts received an Honorable Mention Award at the 32nd Annual TOP COPS Award Dinner, which was held on May 12th in Washington, DC.

On the advice of his doctors, Lucas was not able to attend the awards dinner in our nation’s Capital.  However, Lucas was presented his award today at the Oconee County Council Chambers, located on Pine Street in Walhalla, by Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw.

Also in attendance today was Third District U.S. Congresswoman Sheri Biggs, who is from Oconee County.  Congresswoman Biggs presented Lucas with a signed letter from Governor Henry McMaster, a framed copy of the proclamation that Congresswoman Biggs read recently on the House floor in Washington in regards to Lucas’ award recognition from the NAPO and a United States flag that recently flew over the U.S. Capitol Building, as well as one of Congresswoman Biggs’ Challenge Coins.

According to a news release from the National Association of Police Organizations, Inc., the NAPO has presented the TOP COPS Awards ceremony since 1994 and those nominated are done so by fellow officers.

“The purpose of the TOP COPS Award is to educate the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal and local agencies from the across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year,” according to the NAPO news release.

“We thank the National Association of Police Organizations, Inc. for recognizing Lucas for this prestigious award he has received,” says Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw.  “Lucas continues to make a great recovery; however, we continue to ask you to pray for Lucas and his family as he continues to go through rehabilitation and as he continues to recover from his injuries that he suffered in the officer involved shooting that occurred on November 16th, 2023.  We are also grateful to Congresswoman Biggs for attending today’s presentation, for the presentations she also made to Lucas and for her continued support of law enforcement.”
