(Walhalla, SC)-------------------------------------A Westminster man remains in jail today, pending a bond hearing, after his arrest yesterday afternoon on multiple outstanding drug trafficking and distribution arrest warrants.

57 year old Qawi Aziz Kabir, of Sigmon Drive, was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center at around 5:55pm Wednesday.  Kabir was served with outstanding arrest warrants on two counts of Trafficking in Crack Cocaine, one count of Trafficking in Cocaine and two counts of Distribution of Crack Cocaine.

According to narcotics agents, Kabir has prior convictions for drug trafficking and distribution.

The outstanding arrest warrants were obtained against Kabir as a result of an ongoing investigation by Narcotics Agents from the Sheriff’s Office during which controlled purchases of narcotics were made from Kabir.

Kabir was taken into custody yesterday after a Deputy from the Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement (P.A.C.E.) team observed Kabir driving a vehicle and knew that Kabir had outstanding arrest warrants.  The Deputy initiated a traffic stop, however, Kabir did not pull over and accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to get away.

A pursuit began on Garden Circle near Seneca and concluded after Kabir pulled into a driveway at an address on Hiawassee Drive and ran away into the woods.  Deputies ran after Kabir and took him into custody without incident.

Paramedics were called to the scene due to laceration above one of Kabir’s eyes.  Kabir told Deputies that he fell and cut his eye.  Paramedics transported Kabir to the hospital, where he was treated and released and then transported to jail.

Further investigation by Deputies produced a quantity of Marijuana inside of the vehicle.  Approximately 5 grams of cocaine was also located by Deputies in the woods along the path of the foot pursuit.

As a result of yesterday’s pursuit and investigation, Kabir was also charged with one count each of Possession of Cocaine and Resisting Arrest.  Kabir was also issue a citation for Failure to Stop for a Blue Light and was also issued a summons for Simple Possession of Marijuana.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
