Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Westminster Man on Trafficking in Methamphetamine Charge

(Walhalla, SC)-------------------------------------A Westminster man remains in jail today, pending a bond hearing, after his arrest yesterday afternoon on a charge of Trafficking in Methamphetamine as a result of a traffic stop.

 

28 year old Steven Lee Hightower, of Manor Road, was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center at around 5:35pm Wednesday.  Hightower has also been charged with one count each of Possession of Fentanyl and Possession of a Weapon during Commission of a Violent Crime.

 

Wednesday afternoon, a Deputy assigned to the Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement (P.A.C.E.) team, while on routine patrol on Highway 24 near West-Oak High School, executed a traffic stop on a 2024 GMC Envoy that was displaying a tag that was showing registered to another vehicle.  The traffic stop occurred at an abandoned business on Highway 24.

 

The Deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Hightower.  Hightower told the Deputy that there was Marijuana inside of the vehicle.  A search of the vehicle produced a quantity of Marijuana inside, along with some drug paraphernalia.  Deputies also located a firearm inside of the vehicle, along with some ammunition.

 

A search of the Hightower’s person also produced a quantity of quantity of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl.  Hightower was placed under arrest and transported to jail. 

 

Hightower was also issued citations for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and for Simple Possession of Marijuana. 

 

According to the arrest warrants, Hightower has one prior drug conviction.  Also, under South Carolina law, drug trafficking is considered to be a violent crime. 

 

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
