(Walhalla, SC)--------------------------------------The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is releasing some information today in regards to a program in which non-profit groups can earn funding for their organization by picking up litter.

Our Oconee began last year as an initiative from the Keep Oconee Beautiful Program, in cooperation with Oconee County and the Sheriff’s Office, with the hopes of cleaning up 25% of the roadways in Oconee County by incentivizing local organizations and residents.

Any non-profit organizations, whether it is a school, a business, a civic group or a church, can apply and choose the roads that they desire to clean up.

After verification by the Sheriff’s Office that the entire road segment that was chosen by the organization has been cleaned to a reasonable standard, organizations will be awarded a sum of $250 per mile cleaned (not to exceed 10 miles a year) and the award will be sent by Oconee County via check within 30 days of cleanup completion. Eligible organizations could receive up to $2,500 a year, minus a small cost for supplies, which includes safety vests, work gloves and trash bags.

For more information or if you have questions, please contact Lt. Tommy Crompton with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office at 864-638-4111.
