Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Westminster Man after Overnight Shooting Investigation

(Walhalla, SC)————————————–An investigation into an overnight shooting near Westminster led to the arrest of a Westminster man on charges of Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon during Commission of a Violent Crime.


24 year old Matthew Dillard Fowler of Spy Mountain Road was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 6:20am this morning on a Temporary Custody Order until the arrest warrants were obtained.


A deputy from the Uniform Patrol Division was dispatched last night, around 9:14pm, to Longcreek Highway near Castle Rock Circle and Mud Acres Drive in reference to reports of a shooting. The victim was located on the side of Longcreek Highway with a gunshot wound to one of his legs.


The victim was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to the hospital for further treatment.


Deputies began to gather evidence in the investigation. Based upon evidence gathered, deputies learned that an altercation occurred between Fowler and the victim, inside of a vehicle, which led to Fowler shooting the victim.


The investigation was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division. While at the incident scene, dispatch received a disturbance call at an address on N. Bibb Street in Westminster around 10:27pm last night. Deputies and officers from the Westminster Police Department responded to the scene and took Fowler into custody.


The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing our investigation. At this time, for safety and health privacy concern reasons, the name of the victim will not be released by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
