Second Community Forum to Provide Tips to Avoid Scams and Frauds

(Walhalla, SC)-------------------------------------The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office will be holding their Second “Community Forum” on Thursday, March 7th.   The Forum will take place at Duke Energy’s World of Energy at the Oconee Nuclear Station, which is located at 7812 Rochester Highway near Seneca.

The second Forum, which will begin at 6:30pm, will focus on Scams and Frauds.  Investigators from the Financial Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Bureau will provide tips on how citizens can protect their Personal Identifying Information and avoid financial loss.  Doors to the World of Energy will open at 6pm that evening.

Back on August 15th of last year, the Sheriff’s Office held their first “Community Forum” which focused on Active Attacks.  The School District of Oconee County also presented their Reunification Plan information at the first Forum.

“The Sheriff’s Office receives calls from our citizens on a variety of scams and frauds,” says Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw.  “Unfortunately, some of our citizens have lost thousands of dollars.  Besides financial loss, the compromising of someone’s personal identifying information could lead to the victim’s information being used to take out fraudulent loans and credit cards, which in turn may ruin the victim’s credit score and rating.  All of this may require extensive work by the victim to rectify any problems that arise.”

Sheriff Crenshaw says that the Sheriff’s Office does not want our citizens to become victims.  The tips and recommendations provided by the Fraud Unit are the best practices to help protect a person’s financial account information and Personal Identifying Information, according to Sheriff Crenshaw.

After the presentation, there will be a time for a question and answer segment.  The entire presentation should last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.

“We are grateful to our partners with Duke Energy for hosting our Second “Community Forum” and making the auditorium at the World of Energy available in order to provide this important information to our citizens” says Sheriff Crenshaw.
